 Dedicated to the Kievan princess, eldest daughter of Yaroslav the Wise, under whose reign the Kievan Rus' state reached the height of its power. Yaroslav, for diplomatic purposes, arranged dynastic marriages that strengthened foreign alliances and elevated the state's prestige. In 1044, Elisabeth became the wife of the Norwegian King Harald III Sigurdsson, known as Harald Hardrada, who, during his first visit to Kiev, fell in love with the princess and, after gaining glory and treasure, returned to marry her. After Harald's death in battle, Elisabeth Yaroslavna married King Sven II Estridsen of Denmark. The primary sources of information about Elisabeth come from the Icelandic royal sagas, Western chronicles, and the poems Harald himself composed in honor of Yaroslav's daughter.
