Coin Turkey Seljukid of Rum, Kay Khusraw III - Silver Dirham - 1270 / 1284 Erzincan

This silver dirham was struck under the reign of Kay Khusraw III at the mint of Erzincan, an important city in eastern Anatolia.

Kay Khusraw III ascended to the throne at a very young age amid a context of strong political instability. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, once a major power in Anatolia, was then subjected to Ilkhanid domination following the Battle of Köse Da?. The sultan held only limited authority, while the principal political and military decisions were largely influenced by representatives of Mongol power.

Erzincan held a strategic position on the trade routes connecting eastern Anatolia, Iran, and the Mediterranean basin. Its active mint bears witness to the city's economic importance despite the progressive decline of the sultanate. This coin thus illustrates a transitional period during which Seljuk institutions still survived, but under the growing tutelage of Mongol power.
