Description

Alexander Vasilyevich Souvorov, often referred to as Suvorov in English, was a renowned Russian general of the 18th century. Born on November 24, 1729, into a noble Russian family, he became one of the most celebrated commanders of the Russian Imperial Army and is known for his daring military strategy and ability to lead successful campaigns.

Suvorov was educated in an artillery school and began his military career during the Seven Years' War. He distinguished himself in numerous battles and gained a reputation as a brilliant tactician. He also played a crucial role in the Russo-Turkish Wars and contributed to Russia's territorial expansion into the Caucasus and Crimea.

One of his most famous campaigns is the Italian campaign of 1799 during the Wars of the Second Coalition against revolutionary France. Suvorov managed to cross the Alps and achieve impressive victories in northern Italy. However, despite his military successes, political circumstances and the situation on the home front eventually led to the failure of this campaign.

Suvorov was known for his motto "Speed is the essence of war," highlighting his swift and audacious approach on the battlefield. He was also recognized for his dedication to his soldiers and for sharing in their hardships.

His exceptional military career was marked by numerous victories, and his reputation remained untarnished in his lifetime. Suvorov passed away on May 18, 1800. He continues to be revered in Russia and in world military history as one of the greatest generals of the pre-Napoleonic era.
