1 May 1994 14:17. During the San Marino Formula 1 Grand Prix, on the Imola circuit, Ayrton Senna starts the 7th lap in first position. Suddenly, the steering column of his Williams FW16 gave way and the car crashed into the Tamburello bend at 240 kph. At 6.40pm, Ayrton Senna died in Bologna hospital. He was 34 years old (born in 1960). 161 Grands Prix, 41 wins, 65 pole positions, 19 fastest race laps and 610 points. Three times world champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991. Considered one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, twenty years after his death he continues to generate applause and enthusiasm around his name. A silver piece was designed by Marco Petta and modelled by Silvia Petrassi. The face of the champion and his Williams FW16 single-seater are the subjects depicted; the legends ‘1994’, ‘2014’, ‘AYRTON SENNA’, the value ‘5 EURO’ and the symbol R of the Italian Mint complete the design.
