Common silver coin minted in Saint Petersburg in 1927, the last year of issue of the Soviet silver Poltinnik. This vintage marks the end of a short but intense four-year series ? the USSR definitively abandoned silver for its circulating coinage from 1928 onwards, in favor of less noble metals, in the context of the forced industrialization of the first Stalinist five-year plan.
The obverse depicts the characteristic Soviet emblem: double wheat sheaf, globe, hammer and sickle, ribbon in six folds, the motto Workers of all countries, unite! and the value ODIN POLTINNIK written out in full. The reverse features the Soviet blacksmith at his anvil, symbol of the triumphant industrial proletariat, with the date 1927. The edge bears the inscription Pure silver 9 grams with the initials PL.
Engraved by Thomas Ross. Medal alignment. Demonetized at the 1947 monetary reform.
The coin shows traces of superficial soiling without altering the legibility of the details or the overall quality of the strike ? a gentle cleaning could advantageously reveal the relief.
