Superb silver circulation coin minted in St. Petersburg in 1924, during the very first years of the Soviet Union. The Poltinnik ? a popular Russian term for the half-coin, or 50 kopecks ? is one of the most iconic issues of early Soviet coinage, minted while the USSR was attempting to stabilize its monetary system after the upheavals of the Revolution and the Civil War.
The obverse features the emblem of the Soviet Union: two sheaves of wheat framing the globe, the rising sun, and the hammer and sickle. A ribbon wraps around the sheaves in six loops, symbolizing the six founding republics of the USSR. On either side appear the letters SSSR (USSR), and below is the value in full text ODIN POLTINNIK (one half-ruble). The motto Workers of all countries, unite! runs all around. The reverse depicts a blacksmith striking his anvil with a hammer ? a powerful figure of Soviet worker labor ? with the date 1924. The edge bears the inscription Pure silver 9 grams (2 zolotniki 10.5 doli) with the initials PL of the mint master.
Engraved by Thomas Ross. Medal alignment. Demonetized during the 1947 Soviet monetary reform.
Condition: VF+ ? circulated coin, well-defined details, slight homogeneous wear.
