Description

Obverse: VALERIANVS. P. F. AVG

Reverse: DEO VOLKANO

The historical context of this coinage is defined by a critical period for the Roman Empire, often referred to as the Crisis of the Third Century. Valerian I, who came to power in 253, attempted to stabilise a territory threatened on multiple fronts by Gothic and Alemannic incursions, as well as by Sassanid pressure from the east.

The monetary issue featuring Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metallurgy, carries a powerful symbolic dimension. By invoking the figure of the divine smith, the imperial authority emphasises the creative strength and solidity of the State during a phase of military and economic disintegration. The depiction of the temple reinforces the idea of divine protection ensuring the integrity of the Empire.

Despite these efforts of numismatic propaganda, the reign of Valerian I was tragically marked by his capture in 260 at the Battle of Edessa against the Sassanid king Shapur I, making him the only Roman emperor ever captured by a foreign enemy. This event durably shook the stability of imperial power and the confidence of its citizens.
