The reverse depicts Annona, the divine personification of Rome's grain supply, standing and facing left. She holds a wheat ear in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left. At her feet rests a modius, an emblematic grain measure, reinforcing the nurturing symbolism of the figure.

Philip I, originally from Arabia, rose to power in 244 following the death of Gordian III. His reign coincided with a period of internal tensions and increasing pressure on the Empire's borders, particularly from the Sassanids in the east and Germanic peoples in the north. In 247?248, he lavishly celebrated the millennial anniversary of Rome, thereby asserting his imperial legitimacy and his attachment to Roman tradition.

The depiction of Annona on this coin is far from incidental: it reflects the imperial desire to project the stability of the grain supply and the prosperity of the Empire, at a time when political, military, and economic difficulties were gradually intensifying. This iconographic type, recurrent in the monetary propaganda of the period, was intended to reassure the Roman population of the emperor's ability to guarantee the provisioning of the capital.
