The 500 Francs banknote, issued by the Institut d'Émission des Départements d'Outre-Mer for the department of Réunion, features maritime motifs and female portraits on its obverse. The inscription "Département de la Réunion" appears at the top and bottom, framing the nominal value of "500" repeated on both sides. The designation "République Française" is also visible.
The mention "Contre valeur de 10 Nouveaux Francs" is observed, indicating the conversion from the old to the new monetary unit. The signatures of the Director General and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board are affixed. The names of the artists, C. Serveau (FEC.) and C. Beltrand (SC.), also appear, acknowledging their respective contributions to the design and engraving of the banknote. Sailing boats in a port and two women's faces are depicted.
On the reverse, the banknote features agricultural carts pulled by oxen, as well as farmers at work. This scene evokes the agricultural activity of Réunion. The dimensions of the banknote are 180 mm in length and 96 mm in width. The writing used is Latin.
This banknote was issued between 1967 and 1971 and belongs to the W.1 series. Clément Serveau is credited as the designer and Camille Beltrand as the engraver.
