The 10 pesos oro banknote from the Dominican Republic, issued in 2002, pays tribute to Matías Ramón Mella, a prominent political figure in the country. This banknote belongs to the FX series and features a color palette where green dominates on a yellow background, enhanced with multicolored watermark patterns.
On the front of the banknote, the portrait of Matías Ramón Mella is positioned on the right, while the seal of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic is visible on the left. The center of the banknote is adorned with a floral representation of the mahogany tree, a botanical species known as La caoba (Swietenia mahagoni). You can also find the following inscriptions: "ESTE BILLETE TIENE FUERZA LIBERATORIA PARA EL PAGO DE TODAS LAS OLIGACIONES PUBLICAS O PRIVADAS", "BANCO CENTRAL DE LA REPUBLICA DOMINICANA", and the nominal value "DIEZ PESOS ORO", as well as the name "MATÍAS RAMÓN MELLA".
The back of the banknote features an illustration of the Altar de la Patria, a mausoleum dedicated to the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic. The dimensions of this banknote are 156 mm in length and 67 mm in width.
Matías Ramón Mella (1816-1864) is an emblematic figure of the Dominican Republic. As a politician and general, he played a crucial role in the Dominican War of Independence. Mella is best known for firing the shot that marked the beginning of the rebellion against Haitian rule in 1844, an event that led to the founding of the Dominican Republic.
