This commemorative coin comes from Portugal and was minted in 1968. Its face value is 50 escudos, the country's monetary unit at the time. The coin is dedicated to Pedro Álvares Cabral, a Portuguese navigator famous for being the first European to reach Brazil in 1500.
The coin is made of silver. It weighs 18 grams and its diameter measures 34 millimeters.
The main motif of the coin depicts the coat of arms of Portugal. This coat of arms is composed of a central shield, itself divided into several parts. The main part of the shield contains five small blue shields, each adorned with five silver bezants. These small shields represent the five Moorish kings that King Afonso I of Portugal is said to have defeated at the Battle of Ourique. A red border adorned with seven golden castles surrounds the central shield. These castles symbolize the Portuguese victories over the Moors in the Algarve.
The shield is placed on a cross of the Order of Christ, a Portuguese religious and military order that played an important role in the country's maritime expansion. The whole is surmounted by a royal crown.
The coin commemorates Pedro Álvares Cabral, an emblematic figure in Portuguese history. His expedition in 1500 marked an important milestone in the exploration of the New World and paved the way for the Portuguese colonization of Brazil.
