A red border adorned with seven golden castles surrounds the central shield. These castles symbolize the Portuguese victories over the Moors in the Algarve.

The shield is placed on a cross of the Order of Christ, a Portuguese religious and military order that played an important role in the country's maritime expansion. The whole is surmounted by a royal crown.
