This complete series brings together five coins issued by Vanuatu, covering the years 2022 and 2023. It includes the following denominations: 2 Vatu, 10 Vatu, 20 Vatu, 50 Vatu and 100 Vatu, forming a representative set of the current monetary circulation of this island nation in the South Pacific.
The Vatu is the official monetary unit of the Republic of Vanuatu, introduced in 1981 when the country gained independence, replacing the New Hebrides franc. This currency is issued under the authority of the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu, the institution responsible for the country's monetary policy.
Vanuatu coins traditionally feature designs closely linked to local culture and wildlife. The obverses generally display the national coat of arms of Vanuatu, depicting a Melanesian warrior holding a spear and shield, surrounded by plant symbols characteristic of the archipelago. The reverses showcase endemic animal species or cultural elements specific to the archipelago, such as shells, plants or marine animals typical of this region of the Pacific.
The smaller denomination coins, such as the 2 Vatu and the 10 Vatu, are more modest in size, while the higher values, in particular the 50 Vatu and the 100 Vatu, are larger in format. The total weight of the entire series is 38 grams, reflecting the diversity of formats within this collection.
This series covers two distinct years, 2022 and 2023, making it a set that documents a contemporary period of production of Vanuatu's coinage, thus offering a complete overview of the coins currently in circulation in this archipelago composed of more than 80 islands.
