The 1 Rouble "Soviet Star" of 1921 is a coin struck by the Saint Petersburg Mint under the authority of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), in the context of the monetary reform that accompanied the early years of the Bolshevik regime. This issue marks an important transitional period in Russian monetary history, where the old imperial symbols gave way to revolutionary iconography.
The coin is struck in 900 thousandths fine silver, reflecting a high standard of metallurgical quality. It features a weight of 20 grams and a diameter of 33.65 millimetres, dimensions characteristic of the large Russian silver roubles inherited from the Tsarist tradition, preserved despite the change of regime.
Iconographically, the obverse of this coin bears the new symbols of the nascent Soviet state, including the star that gives this series its popular name. The reverse carries the face value of 1 rouble along with Cyrillic inscriptions specific to the RSFSR. The initials AG appearing in the designation refer to the mint master who supervised the striking.
The 1921 date corresponds to the first year of issue of this Soviet monetary type, which gives it particular historical significance in the field of Russian and Soviet numismatics. The mintage amounts to 1,000,000 examples, a significant figure reflecting the desire of the Soviet authorities to ensure sufficient monetary circulation in an economy in full reconstruction after several years of civil war and global conflict.
