Description
This 25 pence Crown was issued by the United Kingdom in 1980 to commemorate the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Struck by the Royal Mint of London, it is part of the British tradition of Crown commemorative coins, regularly produced to mark events related to the royal family.
The coin is made of copper-nickel, an alloy commonly used for this type of striking during this period. It has a diameter of 38.61 millimetres and a weight of 28.28 grams, dimensions characteristic of the Crown denomination, giving the coin a notable presence in hand.
The obverse of the coin features the official portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, sovereign of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth at the time of issue. The reverse is dedicated to the celebration of the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, an iconic figure of the British monarchy of the 20th century, born on 4 August 1900.
With a mintage of 9,306,000 pieces, this issue was produced in a relatively large quantity, reflecting the popular interest generated by this royal anniversary in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth countries.
