The George V silver florin struck in 1922 is a coin issued by the Royal Mint of London on behalf of the United Kingdom. It represents a face value of one florin, a British monetary unit equivalent to two shillings, in common use at the time.
This coin is struck in silver with a fineness of 500 thousandths, an alloy known as "fine silver" adopted by the United Kingdom from 1920 onwards, replacing the 925 thousandths silver used previously. This change in metallurgical composition was introduced following the economic difficulties caused by the First World War. The coin has a weight of 11.31 grams and a diameter of 28.5 millimetres.
The obverse of the coin features the portrait of George V, King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India, whose effigy is accompanied by traditional Latin inscriptions mentioning his royal and imperial titles. The reverse displays the characteristic design of the florin of this period, depicting the emblems of the constituent nations of the United Kingdom, framed by a legend indicating the face value.
George V, born in 1865 and acceding to the throne in 1910, reigned until his death in 1936. His effigy appeared on British coins throughout his reign, with several successive portrait variants. The 1922 florin belongs to the so-called "modified portrait" series by Bertram Mackennal, the official sculptor of the Royal Mint for George V's effigies.
This issue constitutes a numismatic testament to the interwar period in the United Kingdom, marked by a significant monetary reform directly affecting the metallic composition of everyday circulating coins.
