This commemorative 5 dinars coin was issued in 1976 by the Republic of Tunisia on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of National Independence, proclaimed on 20 March 1956. It was struck at the Paris Mint (Monnaie de Paris), identified by the mintmark « A ».
The coin is composed of 925 millesimal fine silver, with a weight of 12 grams and a diameter of 31 millimetres. The mintage reached 200,000 pieces. This is a commemorative coin not intended for general circulation.
The obverse features the bust of Habib Bourguiba facing left, the first President of the Tunisian Republic from 1957 to 1987 and a central figure in the country's path to independence. The peripheral legend bears his name and title ? « HABIB BOURGUIBA / PRÉSIDENT DE LA RÉPUBLIQUE TUNISIENNE » ? along with the equivalent inscriptions in Arabic.
The reverse is adorned with a stylised motif evoking flight, interpreted as birds or flames, characteristic of the work of engraver E. Mekki, whose signature appears on this side. The face value « 5 DINARS » is shown in French and in Arabic (« 5 ?????? »), accompanied by the legend « XXe ANNIVERSAIRE DE L'INDÉPENDANCE · MARS 20 » as well as the dates 1956 and 1976 placed on either side of the composition. The same inscriptions are reproduced in Arabic in the upper part of the field.
This issue is part of a series of Tunisian commemorative coins dedicated to the major anniversaries of the First Republic, alongside issues relating to the anniversaries of Victory and the Republic. Tunisian independence brought an end, on 20 March 1956, to several decades of French protectorate established in 1881.
