This 100 pesetas coin was issued in Spain in 1966, under the regime of General Francisco Franco. The date struck on the coin is 1966, while the actual year of minting, visible in the stars, is 1967, a common practice for Spanish issues of this period.
The coin was struck at the Madrid mint, identified by the M mintmark. This coin is composed of silver with a fineness of 800 thousandths, i.e. 80% pure silver. It has a weight of 19.71 grams and a diameter of 34 millimetres, making it a coin of substantial size and weight for the era.
The obverse of the coin depicts the portrait of Francisco Franco, head of state of Spain from 1939 to 1975. This effigy, facing right, is accompanied by the legend "FRANCISCO FRANCO CAUDILLO DE ESPAÑA POR LA G. DE DIOS", asserting his title as leader of Spain by the grace of God. The reverse bears the coat of arms of Francoist Spain, surrounded by the face value and the name of the country. The five-pointed stars flanking the shield frame the last two digits of the actual year of minting.
This issue is part of a series of silver coins produced during the Francoist era, representing a significant numismatic and historical testimony of 20th-century Spain. The coin illustrates both the official iconography of the regime and the metallurgical standards of the Spanish Mint of this period.
