This 1 rand coin was issued in 1966 by South Africa, under the authority of the Pretoria Mint, identified by the mint mark SA. It is part of a series dedicated to commemorating the founding figures of South African history.
The obverse of the coin depicts Jan van Riebeeck, a Dutch navigator and colonial administrator who founded the Cape Colony in 1652 on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. His portrait forms the central element of this face, accompanied by the standard inscriptions characteristic of South African monetary issues of this period, reflecting the country's official bilingualism in Afrikaans and English.
The coin is struck in 800 millesimal fineness silver, an alloy composed of 80% silver and 20% base metals, in accordance with the metallurgical standards used at the South African Mint during the 1960s. It weighs 15 grams and has a diameter of 32.7 millimetres, dimensions that give it a notable physical presence in the hand.
The year 1966 is particularly significant in South African monetary history, as it corresponds to the first full year of circulation of the decimal rand, introduced in February 1961 to replace the South African pound. Issues from this period are therefore among the first to adopt this new national monetary unit. The strike quality and metallic characteristics of this coin make it a representative example of the numismatic production of the SA mint during this decade.
