Description

This 10 Deutsche Mark coin was issued by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1972 to commemorate the Munich Olympic Games, a major sporting event held in the Bavarian capital that same year. It is part of a commemorative series dedicated to this international event.

This coin was struck at the Karlsruhe mint, identifiable by the letter G, the distinctive mint mark of this German monetary institution. The mintage of this issue amounts to 4,850,000 pieces.

The coin is composed of silver with a fineness of 625?, corresponding to an alloy containing 62.5% pure silver. It has a weight of 15.5 grams and a diameter of 32.5 millimetres, standard dimensions for German commemorative coins of this era and face value.

On the obverse, the coin features the German federal eagle, the official emblem of the Federal Republic of Germany, accompanied by the face value of 10 Deutsche Mark and the name of the issuing state. The reverse is adorned with a motif related to the Munich Olympic Games, a design characteristic of the graphic style developed for this edition of the Games, notably inspired by the work of designer Otl Aicher and his team, who created the complete visual identity of these Olympic Games.

The 1972 Munich Olympic Games marked the second time Germany hosted the Summer Games, after Berlin in 1936. This commemorative series represents an important numismatic testimony to this historic event, marked both by its architectural and sporting innovations, as well as by the tragic events that overshadowed its course.
