The Monnaie de Paris issued in 2021 this 20 euro silver coin as part of the series dedicated to the Chinese Calendar, celebrating the Year of the Ox. This issue is part of the French numismatic tradition of commemorating the cycles of the Chinese lunar zodiac through Belle Épreuve quality strikes.
The coin is struck in 999 thousandths pure silver, making it a coin of high metallic purity. It features a precise weight of 31.104 grams and a diameter of 37 millimetres, dimensions characteristic of silver ounce coins. The Belle Épreuve (BE) quality strike guarantees polished fields and satin reliefs, offering a refined visual contrast and a particularly accomplished finish.
The Ox, the second animal of the Chinese zodiac, is depicted on this coin with particular attention to detail. In Chinese astrological tradition, this animal symbolises perseverance, hard work and rigour. The Year of the Ox returns every twelve years in the Chinese lunar calendar.
This issue comes from workshop A of the Monnaie de Paris, the only official French workshop authorised to strike French legal tender coins. The face value of 20 euros is issued by France and constitutes recognised legal tender. The mintage is limited to 3,000 pieces, making it a coin with restricted circulation in the world of contemporary French numismatics. The year of issue is 2021, corresponding precisely to the entry into the Year of the Ox according to the Chinese lunar calendar, which began on 12 February 2021.
