The Monnaie de Paris issued this 10 euro silver coin in 2019 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Asterix, the iconic comic strip created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo in 1959. This issue is dedicated to Dogmatix, Obelix's faithful canine companion and an essential character in the Gaulish universe.
The coin is struck in Belle Épreuve (BE) quality, a refined striking technique that gives the coin sharp and precise relief, with superior surface quality that highlights the finest details of the design. It was produced at the A mint, corresponding to the Paris Mint, and bears the distinctive mark of this institution.
From a technical standpoint, the coin has a diameter of 37 millimetres and a weight of 22.2 grams. It is composed of silver with a fineness of 900 thousandths, meaning 90% pure silver. Its face value is 10 euros, giving it legal tender status in France.
This coin belongs to a series dedicated to the various characters of the Gaulish village, each featuring an iconic protagonist of the saga. Dogmatix, recognisable by his small size and his unwavering devotion to Obelix, is depicted in the characteristic graphic style of the original comic strip. The artists of the Monnaie de Paris faithfully reproduced the aesthetic of the albums for this commemorative occasion.
The mintage is limited to 3,000 copies, making it a limited-distribution issue. This limitation ensures the rarity of the coin within this anniversary series dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Asterix, a series celebrating one of the most iconic characters in Franco-Belgian comics.
