Description

16 deniers ? Louis XIV ? 1707 ? Strasbourg Mint

Billon coin struck at the royal mint of Strasbourg under Louis XIV (1643-1715). This type, known as « à l'écu de France », is characteristic of the Strasbourg divisional coinage at the end of the reign, at a time when the city, annexed by France in 1681, still struck low-grade coins for local circulation.

Obverse: crowned shield of France with three fleurs-de-lis, flanked by the value marks X and VI. Legend LVD · XIIII · D · G · FR · ET · NAV · REX, meaning « Louis XIV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre ».

Reverse: cléché and fleurdelisée cross, surrounded by the legend SIT · NOMEN · DNI · BENEDICTVM (« Blessed be the name of the Lord ») and the date 1707.

Characteristics: billon, approximately 21 to 22 mm. Reference Duplessy 1597.

Condition: VF (Very Fine). Full strike, legends legible on both sides, attractive uniform brown patina. Slightly short flan on the reverse, which is common for this type.

A small everyday circulation coin from the end of the Sun King's reign, of particular interest for its connection to the Strasbourg mint, a city that had recently become French.
