This 25 colones coin was issued by Costa Rica in 2023 as part of a series dedicated to the country's provinces. It pays tribute to the province of Heredia, one of Costa Rica's seven provinces, and highlights one of its most iconic architectural symbols: El Fortín.
El Fortín is a historic fortified tower located in the city of Heredia. Built in the late 19th century, around 1876, it is considered the only military fortification still standing in Costa Rica and serves as a powerful symbol of regional and national identity. Its depiction on this coin reflects the country's deep attachment to its architectural and historical heritage.
The coin is struck in brass, an alloy of copper and zinc that gives it a distinctive golden hue. It has a diameter of 22.5 mm and a weight of 4.3 grams, dimensions that conform to the usual standards for circulating coins of this denomination issued by the Central Bank of Costa Rica.
The obverse of the coin features El Fortín de Heredia, with an inscription identifying the province. The reverse traditionally bears the indications relating to the face value of 25 colones, as well as the identification elements specific to Costa Rican monetary issues, including the country's name and the year of issue 2023.
This issue is part of Costa Rica's monetary and cultural policy aimed at promoting the heritage of each of its provinces through its circulating coins, turning these currencies into genuine vehicles of collective memory and territorial representation.
