Description
This 500 escudos coin was issued in 2025 by Cape Verde to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Banco de Cabo Verde, an institution founded following the country's independence in 1975 and playing a central role in the monetary sovereignty of this Atlantic archipelago.
The coin is made of bimetal, a minting technique combining two distinct alloys ? typically an outer ring and a central insert of different compositions ? offering a characteristic visual contrast and a high level of security against counterfeiting. This process is commonly used for commemorative circulation or collector coins intended to mark significant institutional events.
The coin has a diameter of 28.4 mm and a weight of 12 grams, dimensions that fall within the usual standards for medium-sized bimetallic coins. These physical characteristics give it a comfortable feel in the hand and a notable presence within the Cape Verdean monetary series.
The Banco de Cabo Verde, whose half-century of existence this coin celebrates, was established in 1975 simultaneously with the country's accession to independence from Portugal. It performed both central bank and commercial bank functions until the banking reform of 1993, which led to the separation of these two roles. The institution is at the origin of the issuance of the Cape Verdean escudo, the national currency pegged to the euro since 1998 under a monetary cooperation agreement with Portugal and the European Union.
This commemorative issue represents a numismatic testament to an important milestone in the economic and institutional history of the Republic of Cape Verde, an archipelago of ten islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal.
