Description
This 20 escudos coin was issued by Cape Verde in 2025 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of independence of the country, proclaimed on 5 July 1975. It is a commemorative issue marking half a century of existence of this Atlantic island state, formerly a territory under Portuguese administration.
The coin is struck in copper-nickel, an alloy commonly used in the production of circulating and commemorative coins due to its durability and resistance to wear. It features a diameter of 28 millimetres and a weight of 10 grams, dimensions that give it a notable presence in the hand.
The mintage is limited to 5,000 pieces, making it a restricted-issue coin intended for collectors and numismatic enthusiasts interested in the monetary and political history of West Africa and the Atlantic islands.
Cape Verde, an archipelago made up of ten main islands located off the Senegambian coast, gained its independence in the context of the African decolonisations of the 1970s. This founding event is the central theme of this issue, whose face value of 200 escudos corresponds to the Cape Verdean national currency, the escudo, in use since the country's independence, although today linked to the euro monetary system through a fixed parity agreement with Portugal.
The year 2025 thus marks the jubilee of fifty years of national sovereignty, and this coin stands as a numismatic testament to this historic anniversary, in keeping with the tradition of commemorative issues that sovereign states produce on the occasion of landmark dates in their national history.
