This banknote is a 1000 francs specimen issued in 1945 for the New Hebrides. It has distinct visual characteristics on both sides.
On the obverse, the banknote features a multicolored design where a market scene is depicted in the background, on the left side. An indigenous woman is seated to the right of this scene. A red overprint of the text "NOUVELLES HÉBRIDES" is affixed at the bottom center, on a New Caledonia banknote referenced P#43c. A manual stamp bearing the word "ANNULE" is visible in the upper left. The inscriptions include "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE" and "MILLE FRANCS", as well as "NOUMÉA". The names of the artists, L. JONAS FEC. and G. BELTRAND SC., are also present. Lucien Hector Jonas is credited as the designer and Georges Léon Égalité Beltrand as the engraver.
On the reverse, the banknote continues with a multicolored design. An indigenous woman is depicted on the left, while an indigenous hunter is visible on the right. Similar to the obverse, a red overprint of "NOUVELLES HÉBRIDES" is placed at the top center on a New Caledonia banknote P#43c. The inscriptions again include "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE" and "NOUVELLE HÉBRIDES", as well as the value "1000". A legal notice is printed, reminding that Article 139 of the Penal Code punishes with forced labor those who counterfeit or falsify banknotes authorized by law. The names of the artists, L. JONAS FEC. and G. BELTRAND SC., are repeated. Lucien Hector Jonas is credited as the designer and Georges Léon Égalité Beltrand as the engraver.
This banknote, printed by the Banque de France, measures 210 mm in length and 120 mm in width.
