This 3 falus struck under the reign of Moulay Slimane is a copper coin issued by the Tétouan mint in 1217 AH, corresponding to the years 1802-1803 of the Gregorian calendar.
The fals (plural: falus) constitutes the basic subdivision of the Moroccan monetary system of that era, and copper coins represented the common currency for everyday transactions within the Alaouite Sultanate. The Tétouan mint was among the active minting centres under the Alaouite sultans, alongside Fez, Meknès and Marrakech.
Moulay Slimane (1792-1822) was the tenth sultan of the Alaouite dynasty. His reign was characterised by a policy of withdrawal and restriction of relations with European powers, as well as by numerous internal revolts, notably from certain religious brotherhoods. He sought to consolidate the authority of the Makhzen in the face of often rebellious tribes. On the foreign front, Morocco maintained tense relations with Spain, whose presence in Ceuta and Melilla was a permanent source of friction. Tétouan, due to its geographical proximity to these enclaves, held a particularly strategic and commercial position within this geopolitical context.
