This fals was issued during the reign of Moulay Abderrahmane, in 1259 of the Hijri calendar, corresponding to the years 1843-1844 of the Gregorian calendar.
The fals represents one of the smallest denominations of the Moroccan monetary system of the time, intended for everyday transactions. Copper issues under Moulay Abderrahmane reflect a structured monetary organisation, although subject to significant economic constraints linked to the political context of the period.
From a historical perspective, the year 1259 AH falls within a particularly turbulent period for the Moroccan sultanate. In 1844, Morocco suffered a military defeat against France at the Battle of Isly, following the support provided by Moulay Abderrahmane to Emir Abd el-Kader in his struggle against French colonisation. This defeat, combined with the bombardment of the cities of Essaouira and Tangier by the French navy, greatly weakened the sultan's authority and led to the signing of the Treaty of Tangier in September 1844. This tense geopolitical context marked the final years of Moulay Abderrahmane's reign, as he was forced to contend with growing European pressure while maintaining the internal stability of the kingdom.
