Theme: 800th anniversary of the construction of the first fortress on the Rock (1215-2015). It was a detachment of Ghibellines (Italy) that built the first fortress on the Rock of Monaco under the orders of Fulco Del Cassello. It was not until 1297 that a Grimaldi seized the fortress by infiltrating it disguised as a Franciscan monk, a famous episode in the history of the Grimaldi family. Today, this 2 euro coin Monaco commemorates the birth of the micro-state with the construction of the first fortress which, although not impregnable, nevertheless contributed to the stability of Monaco.
