This 2 euro commemorative coin, issued by Monaco in 2015, celebrates the 800th anniversary of the construction of the first fortress on the Monegasque rock (1215-2015). Struck in Proof quality, it is in fine condition, although the cardboard case that accompanies it may show slight signs of wear.
The coin is bi-metallic, with a nickel brass center and a cupronickel ring. It weighs 8.5 grams and has a diameter of 25.75 millimeters, with a thickness of 2.20 millimeters. Its edge is reeded and bears the inscription "2" followed by two stars, repeated six times alternately upright and inverted.
The coin's motif commemorates the construction of the first fortress in 1215 by a detachment of Italian Ghibellines under the command of Fulco Del Cassello. This event marks an important milestone in Monaco's history, contributing to its stability over the centuries. In 1297, a member of the Grimaldi family seized the fortress, infiltrating the site disguised as a Franciscan monk, a famous episode in the history of the Grimaldis.
The mintage of this coin is limited to 10,000 copies. It represents a milestone in Monegasque history, symbolizing the birth of the micro-state with the construction of this first fortress. Although it was not impregnable, it played a significant role in the consolidation of Monaco.
