The 2 euro commemorative coin issued by Monaco in 2012 pays tribute to the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Monaco's sovereignty, marking the period 1512-2012.
This coin, with a nominal value of 2 euros, is struck in bi-metal, combining a cupro-nickel center and a cupro-nickel ring. It weighs 8.50 grams and has a diameter of 25.75 millimeters. The coin is classified as UNC (uncirculated), meaning it has not been put into circulation and retains its original mint state. The mintage of this commemorative edition is limited to 100,000 copies.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Lucien I Grimaldi, depicted in profile and facing left. Above the portrait, the inscription "1512 SOUVERAINETÉ DE MONACO 2012" is arranged in an arc along the upper edge of the inner part of the coin. Below the name "LUCIEN Ier", we find the cornucopia, which is the mint mark of the Monnaie de Paris.
The reverse of the coin displays a map of the European continent, superimposed on a dynamic background composed of the twelve stars of the European Union. This representation symbolizes Monaco's integration into the European context, while emphasizing its own identity and sovereignty.
