The series of 20 and 50 Ouguiya issued in 2014 by Mauritania continues the country's traditional monetary system before the 2018 reform that introduced a new ouguiya. These coins therefore belong to the former Mauritanian monetary unit, subdivided into khoums, and bear witness to a recent but already bygone period of the national economy. Today, they represent an interesting reference point for collectors specializing in contemporary African coins.
These two values, 20 and 50 Ouguiya, correspond to intermediate uses in daily circulation. They were intended to facilitate current exchanges, particularly in local markets and everyday transactions. Their coexistence within the same series allowed a certain monetary fluidity, bridging the gap between the smallest divisions and banknotes of higher value.
Visually, these coins highlight strong symbols of Mauritanian identity, often linked to the country's economy, natural resources, or traditional activities. The iconography follows a pedagogical and representative logic, aiming to reflect the pillars of the territory: livestock farming, agriculture, or even the exploitation of resources. The graphic style remains sober and legible, favoring efficiency over artistic complexity.
From a technical point of view, these coins are struck in modern alloys designed to withstand intensive circulation in sometimes difficult conditions. Their manufacture prioritizes durability and production cost, with sufficiently marked reliefs to ensure good tactile and visual identification. Their format and weight remain adapted to daily use, without excessive sophistication.
Today, these coins are demonetized since the monetary reform of 2018, which introduced a new ouguiya with a conversion of 10 old ones for 1 new one. This change gives these coins a special status: they no longer circulate, but remain easily accessible on the numismatic market.
