He ascended to the throne at the age of 17, succeeding his father, King Talal, who abdicated due to mental health issues.

Hussein was a significant and influential leader in the Middle East for several decades. He witnessed and was directly involved in many key events in the region's history, including the Arab-Israeli wars of 1948, 1967, and 1973.
