This Japanese banknote was issued in 1904, corresponding to the 37th year of the Meiji era. Its face value is 20 sen.
The obverse of the banknote features a complex ornamental design incorporating two phoenixes and dragons. The phoenixes, symbols of immortality and rebirth, are depicted with detailed and elegant plumage. The dragons, mythological creatures associated with power and wisdom, complete the design with their sinuous bodies and imposing expressions. The whole is designed to reflect the cultural and historical richness of Japan at that time. The face value, "20", is clearly indicated, allowing easy identification.
The reverse of the banknote repeats graphic elements present on the obverse, ensuring visual consistency. Complex ornamental patterns continue to adorn the banknote, with particular attention paid to detail to prevent counterfeiting. The face value is also repeated on the reverse. The inscriptions are in Japanese, with calligraphic characters that add an artistic and traditional dimension. The year of issue, Meiji 37 (1904), is also inscribed.
It represents a testimony to the financial and artistic history of Japan at the beginning of the 20th century.
