Herodium is the only palace that immortalizes Herod's name. It commemorates the decisive battle of the king against the last Hasmonean king. In this battle, Herod, although displaying great courage, nearly perished in combat. Herodium is located on the edge of the Judean Desert, east of Bethlehem and somewhat south of Jerusalem. Unique in its size and splendor, it is the third-largest palace discovered in the entire Roman world.
