This quarter anna was issued in 1856 under the authority of the British East India Company, a commercial and administrative institution that exercised control over a large part of the Indian subcontinent at the time.
The year 1857 marks a major turning point in the history of British India with the outbreak of the Indian Rebellion, a military and popular uprising of unprecedented scale against the authority of the Company. The conflict lasted until 1858 and had its roots in a combination of tensions related to administrative reforms, perceived threats to religious traditions, and the conditions of service of Indian soldiers. The most significant battles took place in Delhi, Cawnpore, and Lucknow.
Following this revolt, the British government passed the Government of India Act 1858, which led to the dissolution of the East India Company and the transfer of the administration of India to the British Crown. This coin thus belongs to the last monetary issues struck under the authority of the Company before its demise.
