Silver obol minted by the Greek city of Massalia between 121 and 82 BC, an authentic testimony to Phocaean coinage in the south of Roman Gaul. Despite modest preservation, this small coin remains a fragment of history over two millennia old, struck on the soil of modern-day Marseille.
The obverse reveals the profile of Lacydon facing left, the city's founding figure, whose features, although softened by time and circulation, remain identifiable. The reverse features the four-spoked wheel with the letters MA, an emblem of Massaliote coinage, partially visible on this small flan.
Weight of 0.50 g with a diameter of 9 mm ? characteristic dimensions of the late Massaliote obol, the smallest denomination in the Massalia monetary system. Irregular flan and off-center strike typical of ancient artisanal workshops. Homogeneous wear testifies to long circulation in the commercial exchanges of the Phocaean city.
Condition: VG (Very Good) ? visible wear, portrait and wheel partially visible, homogeneous old grey patina.
