Superb German commemorative coin struck in 1994 in Karlsruhe (mint mark G) on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Gottfried Herder (1744?1803), German philosopher, theologian and writer of the Enlightenment, a major figure of the Sturm und Drang movement and a precursor of Romanticism, whose work on language, culture and humanity deeply influenced European thought.
The obverse features the federal eagle with the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 1994 · 10 G · ·DEUTSCHE MARK·. The smooth edge bears the inscription HUMANITÄT IST DER ZWECK DER MENSCHENNATUR ? Humanity is the purpose of human nature.
