Superb German commemorative coin struck in 1995 in Hamburg (mint mark J) to mark the 50th anniversary of the destruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche, a jewel of German Baroque razed during the Allied bombings of February 13 and 14, 1945, whose reconstruction symbolizes reconciliation and peace between peoples.
The obverse features the Federal Eagle with the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND · 10 DEUTSCHE MARK · 19 95 J. The reverse depicts the Dresden Frauenkirche with the inscription 50 JAHRE MAHNUNG ZU FRIEDEN UND VERSÖHNUNG · WIEDER AUFBAU FRAUENKIRCHE DRESDEN ? 50 years of appeal for peace and reconciliation · Reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche. The smooth edge bears the inscription STEINERNE GLOCKE ? SYMBOL FÜR TOLERANZ ? The Stone Bell ? symbol of tolerance.
