Superb German commemorative coin struck in 1992 in Munich (mint mark D) to mark the 150th anniversary of the Pour le Mérite decoration in its civil version, a Prussian order founded by Frederick II in 1740 ? whose French wording testifies to the prestige of the diplomatic language of the era.

The obverse features the federal eagle with the inscription BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND · 10 DEUTSCHE MARK · 1992 D. The reverse depicts the portrait of Alexander von Humboldt, the order's first chancellor, with the Pour le Mérite decoration (civil version) in the background, and the inscriptions ORDEN POUR LE MERITE · FÜR WISSENSCHAFTEN UND KÜNSTE · A.v.HUMBOLDT 1.KANZLER DES ORDENS 1842?1992. The smooth edge bears the inscription GEMEINSCHAFT VON GELEHRTEN UND KÜNSTLERN ? Community of scholars and artists.

Engraved by Werner Godec. Medal alignment (??). Demonetized on December 31, 2001, this coin is now exclusively a collector's item.
