The Semeuse is the emblematic series of the Monnaie de Paris. Focused on historical and numismatic events, since 2014 it has commemorated the very history of coinage. After two years spent commemorating the anniversary of the introduction of the euro in France, the Semeuse is renewing itself and taking a leap back in time. For three years, this new theme will focus on the myths and legends that have shaped the history of gold.
This first cut adapts a piece of Greek mythology, depicting Midas, King of Phrygia, who turns everything he touches into solid gold. Soon realising that this gift from the god Dionysus was in fact a curse, Midas had to wash himself in the river Pactolus to free himself from the curse.
This collector's coin depicts Midas, King of Phrygia. Honoured with the gift of turning everything he touched into pure gold thanks to the god Dionysus, Midas soon suffered from a power that was to make him infinitely rich. Unable to eat or quench his thirst, he sought comfort in the arms of his daughter, who herself turned into a golden statue. He begged Dionysus to take this gift away from him and, according to legend, had to wash himself in the River Pactolus to be freed from this curse.
The reverse features a modernised adaptation of the sower by engraver Louis Oscar Roty, showing a heraldic version of the French flag on the drape of her dress. The word "RF" is also encircled by an interlace of hexagons reminiscent of France.
