Description

This one piastre banknote, issued by the Bank of Indochina in 1950, features distinctive characteristics on both sides.

The front of the banknote depicts a woman dressed in traditional clothing. In the background, you can see the tomb of Minh Mang, the second king of the Nguyen dynasty, located in Hue, Vietnam. The face value of the banknote is printed in red. The inscriptions in Latin indicate the issuing institution, "BANQUE DE L'INDOCHINE", as well as the value "UNE PIASTRE". A legal notice reminds of the penal sanctions incurred in case of counterfeiting, in accordance with Article 139 of the Penal Code. The names of the artists who participated in the design of the banknote, SÉB. LAURENT and HOURRIEZ, are also mentioned.

The back of the banknote depicts a young peasant wearing a traditional Vietnamese hat, carrying a yoke with baskets of coconuts. Buffaloes appear in the background. Texts in Chinese, Lao, Vietnamese, and Thai complete the illustration. The names of the artists, SÉB. LAURENT and HOURRIEZ, are present again.

The watermark integrated into the paper represents a winged head of Mercury. The dimensions of the banknote are 127 mm in length and 80 mm in width.

The series of this banknote is W.10475.
