This bronze medal, created by C.H. de Courcy in 1968 and minted by the Monnaie de Paris, commemorates Charles Maurras (1868-1952), French journalist, essayist, politician and poet.
The obverse features a left-profile portrait of Charles Maurras. The artist's signature, C. H. DE COURCY, is visible beneath the portrait. A circular legend identifies the figure: CHARLES MAVRRAS - 1868-1852.
The reverse of the medal features an allegorical composition accompanied by a double legend. The upper part of the legend, in French, proclaims: JE SVIS NE JE SVIS FAIT POVS LA LVMIERE - ACCORDE-MOI D?ETERNISER LE JOVR. The lower part is inscribed in Greek. The central scene depicts a woman draped in antique style extending her hand to a nude man disembarking from a boat.
Charles Maurras, a controversial figure in French intellectual history, was a member of the Académie Française and a major figure of the nationalist right. His ideas have marked a part of the right and far right in France.
This medal is a historical testimony, reflecting an era and the figures that marked it.
