This 1 franc banknote was issued in 1916 by the Chamber of Commerce of Le Havre, France. It is a bond, a form of emergency currency issued during periods of cash shortage.
The front of the banknote features several Latin inscriptions. It includes the motto "NUTRISCO ET EXTINGUO", as well as the mention "VILLE DU HAVRE ET CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DU HAVRE". It is also indicated that the issue was approved by the Higher Administration. The face value, "BON DE UN FRANC", is clearly displayed, along with the clarification that the banknote is exchangeable for banknotes from the Banque de France. The signatures of the President of the Chamber of Commerce and the Mayor of the City of Le Havre are also present, attesting to the issuing authority. The year of issue, 1916, is prominently printed. The name of the printer, "OBERTHURE RENNES", is mentioned at the bottom.
The back of the banknote contains a legal clause stipulating that the City of Le Havre and the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Le Havre may request a decree setting a minimum period of five years, from the date of said decree, during which the banknotes still in circulation must be presented for reimbursement. The name of the printer, "Oberthur", is mentioned again.
