The 50 cent note issued by the Marseille Chamber of Commerce, dated August 12, 1914, represents a form of emergency currency issued during periods of economic crisis or shortage of cash. This type of note was often produced by local institutions such as chambers of commerce to facilitate everyday economic transactions.
The obverse of the note features the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MARSEILLE" in capital letters, indicating the issuer of this means of payment. The face value, "50 CENTIMES", is also clearly indicated. The signatures of the Treasurer and delegated members of the Chamber of Commerce are present, authenticating the note. The series to which this note belongs is series 7-R. The name of the designer, Valère Bernard, is mentioned, highlighting the artist responsible for the graphic design of the note.
The reverse of the note again bears the inscription "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE MARSEILLE". Excerpts from the deliberations of the Marseille Chamber of Commerce dated August 12, 1914 are reproduced, providing a legal and historical context for the issuance of this note. The name of the printer, "IMP MOULLOT MARSEILLE", is also present, indicating the company responsible for printing the note. The Moullot & fils aîné printing house, located in Marseille, is therefore identified as the printer of this emergency note.
All inscriptions are written in Latin. The overall appearance of the note reflects the aesthetics and technical constraints of the time, testifying to the particular circumstances of its issuance during the First World War.
