This 50 centimes banknote was issued by the Rouen Chamber of Commerce in 1920. It belongs to the third series of this replacement issue and bears the number 160.716.
The obverse of the banknote features an ornamental frame with floral motifs. In the upper part, a central medallion depicts a winged caduceus. On either side of this medallion, two heraldic shields are represented.
Several inscriptions appear on the obverse. We can read "VILLE DE ROUEN" and "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE ROUEN". The face value, "50 CENTIMES", is also indicated. Mentions relating to the issue, such as "Émission de remplacement" (Replacement Issue), "Émission approuvée par l'Administration Supérieure" (Issue approved by the Higher Administration) and "Émission faite sous la garantie de la Ville et de la Chambre de Commerce" (Issue made under the guarantee of the City and the Chamber of Commerce) are present. The signatures of the Mayor and the President, as well as the name of the printer, "IMP. RICHARD, PARIS", complete the obverse.
The reverse of the banknote contains excerpts from articles relating to the Banque de France and the conditions for the redemption of the Bonds. Article 4 stipulates that the Banque de France will not carry out an exchange for a sum less than 20 francs. Article 5 specifies the terms of sight redemption of the Bonds, in particular for amounts greater than or equal to 100 francs, or supplemented by Banque de France banknotes or in cash. Articles 6 and 7 define the role of the Municipal Council and the Chamber of Commerce in the liquidation and final redemption of the divisionary Bonds, as well as the deadlines and conditions of redemption.
