This 50 centime banknote was issued by the Cherbourg Chamber of Commerce in 1921. It is a type of emergency money issued locally in France during or after the First World War, often due to a shortage of official currency.
The front of the banknote features several inscriptions in Latin. It includes the mention of the "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DU GERS" as well as a reference to the "DELIBERATION DU 17 JANVIER 1918". The banknote bears its face value, "50 centimes", and a serial number, in this example "SERIE K | N°96323". The signatures of the treasurer and the president of the Chamber of Commerce are also present. The names of the artists involved in the design and production of the banknote are also listed: "J.E.LACOSTE Inv." (inventor), "E.COLLASSON. Grav." (engraver), and "BOUQUET & Co Imr AUCH." (printer). Ornamental motifs complete the visual.
The back of the banknote displays the names of several localities: "LECTOURE", "AUCH", "LOMBEZ", "COMDOM", and "MIRANDE". The face value "50 cent." is repeated. The name of the printer "BOUQUET & Co Imr AUCH." is mentioned again. The back features a simple and functional typographic composition.
The watermark of the banknote depicts bees. The printer, Th. Bouquet & Cie, based in Auch, was active from 1889 to 2014.
