This 50 centime banknote was issued by the Avignon Chamber of Commerce in 1920. It is part of the context of the First World War, as indicated by the mention "Guerre Européenne de" (European War of) on the front.
The front of the banknote features a vegetal frame adorned with a bee at each corner. The coats of arms of the cities of Avignon, Apt, Orange, and Carpentras are also featured. Specifically, the coat of arms of Avignon is located at the top, that of Apt at the bottom, that of Orange on the right, and that of Carpentras on the left. The inscriptions "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE", "A BEC et GRIFFES", "AVIGNON", "CHAMBRE de COMMERCE d'AVIGNON", "VILLES d'AVIGNON, APT, CARPENTRAS, ORANGE" and "50 CENTIMES" are present. The motto "FELICIBUS APTA TRIUMPHIS" is also found. The signatures of the President and the Secretary-Treasurer are printed, as well as a serial number, here "N° 000,138". The printer is Berger-Levrault, based in Nancy and Paris.
The back of the banknote is decorated with a frame with geometric patterns. The inscriptions "0,50 CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'AVIGNON 0,50" frame a text specifying the conditions for exchanging 2 franc, 1 franc, and 50 centime banknotes issued by the Avignon Chamber of Commerce. It is stipulated that these banknotes are exchangeable in round sums of at least 50 francs for banknotes from the Banque de France. The issuance of these banknotes, planned for a period of five years under a deliberation of August 11, 1915, required their presentation for final reimbursement before August 11, 1920. This reimbursement was guaranteed by the deposit at the Banque de France of their counter-value in banknotes.
