The 50-cent note issued by the Amiens Chamber of Commerce in 1915 is a testament to local French monetary history. This note, with a value of 0.50 cents, is printed in French, reflecting the official language of the time.
The obverse of the note features the inscriptions "CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'AMIENS" in capital letters, highlighting the issuing authority. The face value, "0.50", is repeated on either side of the mention "CINQUANTE CENTIMES" (FIFTY CENTS). The signatures of the Treasurer and the 1st Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce are also present. The mention "IMP, PROGRES DE LA SOMME" indicates the printing company responsible for the production of the note.
The reverse of the note repeats the face value "0.50" and "CINQUANTE CENTIMES" (FIFTY CENTS). An important mention specifies that the issue is guaranteed by a deposit of an equal sum at the Banque de France, thus ensuring confidence in this means of payment. It is also indicated that the notes are exchangeable at sight for sums of at least Five Francs at the Banque DUVETTE in Amiens. A prescription clause stipulates that the note had to be presented for reimbursement before November 5, 1920. Finally, it is specified that this note is valid within the jurisdiction of the Amiens Chamber of Commerce, including the cities of Amiens, Doullens and Montdidier.
The note does not have a watermark. The printer is identified as the Imprimerie du Progrès de la Somme in Amiens. This note represents an example of emergency currency issued during times of crisis or shortage of official currency, thus facilitating local commercial exchanges.
