This 50 centime banknote was issued by the Avignon Chamber of Commerce between 1914 and 1915 in France. It falls within the context of the First World War, as indicated by the mention "European War of...".
The front of the note features a vegetal frame adorned with a bee at each corner. In the center, the inscription "REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" is found. Below this inscription is the mention "A BEC et GRIFFES AVIGNON CHAMBRE de COMMERCE d'AVIGNON VILLES d'AVIGNON, APT, CARPENTRAS, ORANGE 50 CENTIMES CARPENTRAS ORANGE". The note is signed by "Le Président" and "Le Secrétaire-Trésorier". A serial number is also present, in this specific case, "N° 000,138". The coats of arms of the cities of Avignon at the top, Apt at the bottom, Orange on the right and Carpentras on the left can be observed. The motto "FELICIBUS APTA TRIUMPHIS" completes the composition. The name of the printer, "BERGER-LEVRAULT NANCY-PARIS", is also mentioned.
The back of the note features a frame with geometric patterns. The inscription "0,50 CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE D'AVIGNON 0,50" is repeated at the top and bottom. A text specifies the conditions for exchanging the 2 franc, 1 franc and 50 centime vouchers issued by the Avignon Chamber of Commerce, highlighting their exchangeability for Bank of France banknotes in minimum sums of 50 francs. It is specified that the issue is guaranteed by a deposit at the Bank of France and that the banknotes must be presented for final redemption before August 11, 1920.
